VM Import/Export

Posted on January 21, 2025 by wpadmin

AWS provides the VM Import/Export service, which facilitates the import and export of virtual machine images to and from AWS. This service enables you to import existing virtual machine images from your on-premises environment to Amazon EC2 instances and export EC2 instances back to virtual machine images for use outside AWS.

VM Import/Export Overview:

  • Import: Allows you to upload VM images (in formats like VMDK, VHD, and OVA) from your on-premises virtualization environment into AWS, converting them into Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) that can be used to launch EC2 instances.

  • Export: Allows you to export EC2 instances running in AWS back into VM formats such as VMDK or VHD for use in on-premises VMware or Hyper-V environments.
